Set Your Goals Right: Gaining Clarity on Mission, Vision, and Values

There are three things you need to put in place if you wish to leave the rocking chair and break speed limits as you set your goals: vision, mission, and values. You need to have them all mapped out and set in stone – written clearly on a piece of paper. If you don’t have these three things, you honestly cannot go very far. A leader without a clear vision is going nowhere. A vision without a mission most likely will not be accomplished. A mission without a strong set of values would be distracted over time. So what are these three components?

The importance of your mission, vision, and values

What is vision?

Your vision is the mental picture of your goal. It is what you wish to achieve. Ever heard of vision boards? That is where you can write down what you want to get done before the end of the year or month. So the question here is: What are the goals you want to achieve?

What is mission?

Your mission is your driving force. It is the one thing that is driving you toward that vision. Why do you want to do what it is that you want to do? What is the purpose of backing your vision? That is why your mission can only be clear if your vision is clear.

What are your values?

Once you’ve prepared your mission and vision statement, you need to get down to defining your value proposition. According to Google, your values are the things that you believe are important to you. It is what will determine your priorities, set your goals, and, deep down, they’re probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. It is what would direct you on whether or not you could say “yes” or “no” to a certain event.

The power of adding value to others’ lives cannot be underestimated. If you don’t have your values clear, you might as well drop the ball because you might not have the strength to keep the focus when the tides come in.

Finally, you need these three parameters before you go deep into the year. It’s not too late. Grab a book and a pen, sit down, and have these three keys written down. Good luck!

Set your goals with a well-defined mission and vision statement.

We all want to live and perform at an optimal level. If you want to live in optimal conditions, have your vision, mission, and values clear. The question is: What is your mission this year?

A vision statement meets other people’s needs. But if you don’t have anything set, you are depriving the world of an opportunity. Stop thinking about the lack of resources. Having a concrete mission and vision statement connects you to the resources needed for your business to succeed.

You don’t have to get all the information at once. Jot down a word or a sentence that describes what you want to accomplish. Don’t forget to add a time limit, like by the end of the year or at the end of each month.
