Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing: A Path to Achieving Goals

by Tina Wilson

A phrase originally coined by Stephen Covey in his famed book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, “keep the main thing the main thing” refers to directing your focus and efforts towards achieving goals that are closest to your heart.

That said, the inspiration for this topic stems from my recent win at the ToastMasters Division level speaking competition. The message was further reinforced in my mind by TM Hyman when he taught me last year that, in order to make your goals and dreams come true, you have to keep the main thing the main thing.

Keep the main thing the main thing: focus on your goals.

The many competing priorities and demands on our time, energy, and attention make it easy to become distracted. But when we identify the most important thing that will help us achieve our goal and make it our top priority, we increase our chances of success. Focus on goal that helps you fulfill your purpose, and scaling in life becomes an easy feat.

By keeping the main thing the main thing, we can stay focused on the steps and actions that will move us closer to what it is that we want to achieve. This might mean saying no to some distractions or less important tasks; but, it’s a small price to pay for the satisfaction and fulfillment of achieving our dreams. So, keep up the great work and remember to stay focused on the main thing!

As humans, we all have areas of our lives that we want to improve. Whether it’s fitness, nutrition, finance, relationships, or education, there’s always room for growth and development. By identifying which areas of our lives need improvement and taking intentional steps towards progress, we can experience greater fulfillment and success in all aspects of our lives.

How to focus on your goals in 5 easy steps

If you’ve ever struggled with achieving your goals, you’re not alone. Fortunately, with a clear goal, a well-thought-out plan, and consistent action, you can turn your dreams into reality. In this article, I’ll be sharing some practical tips and insights on how to create a goal, develop a plan, and take the necessary steps to make it a reality.

When you identify and prioritize the “main thing” in your business, you’re able to focus your attention, resources, and efforts on the most critical aspects. This focused approach allows you to avoid distractions and stay on track, ultimately increasing your likelihood of achieving success.

Furthermore, it assists in decision-making by allowing you to evaluate options based on their alignment with your core objectives, minimizing risks, and making informed choices. By focusing on your unique value proposition and core competencies, you can differentiate your business from competitors, developing a distinct identity and competitive advantage. Additionally, keeping the main thing in mind allows for adaptability, enabling you to adjust strategies and tactics to navigate changes effectively while staying true to your core objectives.

1.     Clarity

When you define the main thing in your business, you create a sense of purpose and clarity. This definition allows you to articulate your mission, goals, and strategies more effectively, making it easier for team members, stakeholders, and customers to understand and support your vision. With a clear understanding of the main thing, your business can operate with greater focus and direction, leading to increased productivity and success. Clarity paves the way for achieving goals.

2.     Resource Allocation

By keeping the main thing at the forefront of your business, you can allocate resources such as time, money, and manpower effectively and efficiently. This approach helps to prevent the wastage of resources on non-essential activities, enabling you to optimize your operations and increase productivity. Prioritizing the main thing allows you to make informed decisions about how to use your resources, ensuring that they are utilized in the most impactful way possible. As a result, you can achieve greater success and achieve your business goals more efficiently.

3.     Decision-Making

By giving priority to the main thing in your business, you can make more informed decisions. When presented with different options or opportunities, you can assess their alignment with the main thing, enabling you to make choices that support your core objectives and minimize risks. By evaluating decisions against the main thing, you can make more confident and effective choices for achieving goals. This approach ensures that your decision-making is strategic and purposeful, leading to greater success for your business.

4.     Differentiation

Keeping the main thing at the forefront of your business strategy can help set you apart from competitors. By focusing on your unique value proposition and core competencies, you can cultivate a distinct identity and a competitive advantage in the market. This approach enables you to differentiate yourself from others in your industry, helping you to stand out as a leader and attract customers who are aligned with your business’s vision and values. By emphasizing your main thing, you can establish a clear and compelling brand identity that sets you apart and helps drive your business forward.

5.     Adaptability

Maintaining a focus on the main thing in your business does not imply being inflexible or unresponsive to change. Instead, it entails remaining committed to your core objectives while being adaptable to evolving circumstances. By keeping your focus on goal, you can adjust your strategies and tactics in response to changes in the market or other external factors, while still maintaining your core business objectives. To lead your business through conflict and adversities, remember to keep the main thing the main thing.

This approach allows your business to stay nimble and responsive, navigating changes effectively while continuing to prioritize the most important aspects of your operation. In this way, keeping the main thing the main thing enables you to stay true to your vision while also embracing the adaptability necessary for long-term success.
