Recently, I had the privilege of attending the 10X Growth Con event hosted by Grant Cardone in Las Vegas, where I had the pleasure of listening to some truly inspirational speakers. This experience was extremely emotional for me, given that this coming Saturday, I will be commemorating the life of my son, Jamal Gaines, who was tragically murdered and taken from us 7 years ago without any justice ever having been served. Grant’s event helped me remember how important it is to recognize and celebrate the achievements of people who have made a difference in our lives.
Allow me to share a traumatizing personal story. Picture the most incredible day of your life. For me, that day was February 26th, 2016. The day started off at 4 a.m. when I woke up and headed to teach a fantastic class at NYSC. After class, I went home, picked up my son, and drove him to work. The moment that’s etched in my mind forever is when I watched him step out of the car with his signature smile. However, while my son was still at the sneaker boutique store that he owned, some men broke in and shot him, fatally injuring him. In the blink of an eye, what had started out as a picture-perfect day quickly turned into the most devastating and heartbreaking moment of my life.
